California CA Law

What is about the new Carbon Monoxide law?
You probably have heard in the radio news about the new California law requiring carbon monoxide detectors installed in your homes.  California Senate Bill 183 requires Carbon Monoxide Alarms installed for dwelling units intended for human occupancy with a fuel burning appliance, fireplace or attached garage.

What are the effective dates?
It starts July 1, 2011 for existing Single-Family dwellings
It starts January 1, 2013 for existing Multi-Family dwellings

What is Carbon Monoxide?
Carbon Monoxide is a colorless, odorless gas which is highly toxic to humans and animals in high quantity. Because of those three main characteristics, people could be inhaling and not realize it.

How does Carbon Monoxide formed?
Carbon Monoxide is formed when there is not enough oxygen to produce Carbon Dioxide. Thus, most likely Carbon Monoxide is formed in an enclosed space such as enclosed garage while vehicle is operating. Other scenarios where Carbon Monoxide can form are from malfunctioning fuel-burning appliances such as furnaces, water heaters, and gas and kerosene room heaters. Portable generators, fireplaces, and charcoal burned in enclosed space can also generate Carbon Monoxide.

What are the numbers of Carbon Monoxide poisoning?
According to California Air Resources Board, up to 40 California residents die each year from carbon monoxide poisoning. There is also hundreds of avoidable emergency room visits and hospitalization each year. According to Centers for Disease Control and Prevention, the common symptoms of Carbon Monoxide poisoning are headache, dizziness and vomiting, but high levels can cause loss of consciousness and death.

How do we prevent Carbon Monoxide poisoning?
Carbon Monoxide poisoning is an avoidable deaths which is preventable by installing carbon monoxide detectors.

Which Carbon Monoxide detectors are approved for installation?
